âThanks for getting back to me so soon, Russ,â said Nelson Defoe, in a cyberconference with Russ Monroe. They were using small video instead of full screen, because encryption slowed down full screen to the point that it was too jerky. âIt may be a little earlier than we planned, but we have some new strategies to talk about. Since you are the one that is appearing in the ads and the one that is paying for them, anything that will have a major impact on our strategy should be run past you.â
âI appreciate that,â said Monroe.
âDo you remember when we were talking about the new addition to our team,â asked Defoe, âthe expert in propaganda and mind control techniques? Heâs lending us a hand with our advertising campaign. For security reasons, we wonât be meeting him. Heâll advise us indirectly. So far, all we have from him is a list of basic propaganda techniques for our writers to consider. Once they have digested them, there will be more to come.â
âIf it helps us get where we aim to go,â said Monroe. âIâm for it.â
âExactly the way I see it,â said Defoe. âThe government is doing everything it can to make the people think the way it wants them to think. If we are going to have any chance at all, we have to get enough people to think for themselves. We have to combat the governmentâs powerful mind control programs. We donât have the billions of dollars that they have to work with, and we donât have the full cooperation of most of the media the way they do. To win, we have to get as much bang for our buck as we possibly can. We have to fight fire with fire plus a lot of ingenuity.â
âIâm the kind of person that likes to win,â said Monroe. âIâm an honest man, and I donât cheat. But, the other side is out to bury us. If we pussyfoot around, playing by the Marquis of Queensbury rules, they are going to hit us with a sledgehammer and kill us. If you are asking me if I want a sledgehammer to fight back with, youâre danged right I do. I like an honest fight, but if the other guy is shooting at you, you either shoot back or, sooner or later, they are going to kill you. They picked the weapons; we just go along. Have at it.â
âDo you want to hear the basic techniques that we have so far?â
âIf it wonât take too long, Iâd like to,â said Monroe.
âIâve got your old friend, Charlie Davis, here,â said Defoe. âIâll let him tell you about them. Switch on, Charlie.â
âHello, Russ,â said Charlie. Charlie Davis had been Monroeâs top speech writer during his presidential campaign. When Monroe had thrown in with S.M.A.R.T., he had contacted his old campaign team, and most of them were now working for S.M.A.R.T. Since Defoe had brought most of his presidential campaign team too, S.M.A.R.T. had a sizable group of experienced campaigners.
